Join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute and Rush University as we celebrate the life and legacy of Alexander Lane, the first African American male student at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and an 1895 graduate of Rush Medical College. Lane used education to rise from slavery in pre-Civil War Mississippi to become an educator, physician and Illinois state representative from Chicago. Come learn more about this remarkable story and how we plan to honor him through an internship program to provide opportunities for students to enter public service.
